After much speculation, the NFL has officially allowed its players to wear patriotic gear for Sunday’s games — the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Initially, it seemed as if players could face fines in excess of 000 for wearing commemorative equipment that hasn’t been authorized by the NFL. A number of players, including Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs and Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, are planning to wear gear that pays tribute to the victims of the attacks. Reebok has apparently sent a number of memorial gloves, cleats and helmets to players across the NFL. According to both ESPN and Yahoo, Peyton Manning faced a potential 000 fine in 2002, when he wanted to wear special cleats to honor the late Johnny Unitas. But Lance Briggs argued that if the NFL had no problem with pink apparel during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they should have no issue with red, white and blue tributes on 9-11. And it turns out he is right. It now appears that the NFL has changed its tune. Avoiding a potential PR disaster, the league clarified Friday that they will not be fining individuals who chose patriotic uniform modifications, as long as the apparel is from an NFL sponsor. www.businessinsider.com content.usatoday.com www.huffingtonpost.com www.nydailynews.com sports.yahoo.com Video Rating: 3 / 5
